Do you have the right skills to be a warehouse operative? If you’re thinking of getting into the industrial sector then the good news is that there is plenty of work available! Factories and warehouses up and down the country will always need good workers. But you might wonder whether or not you’re cut out for the role. After all, it’s important to pick a job where you know you’ll excel.
Here at Prime, our industrial division has been running for over 26 years. In this time, we’ve helped thousands of people into work. It should come as no surprise, then, that we know by now what skills make up a strong warehouse operative! To help answer your question, we’ve put together a handy list of the top 6 skills that will help you succeed as a warehouse operative. Don’t be put off if you are stronger on some of these than others – most of these can be built up over time!
1. Physical fitness
Warehouse work can be tiring. Whether you’re unloading lorries or sorting stock, the chances are that you’ll be on your feet. But don’t worry if you’re not exactly an Olympic athlete – warehouse work is a good chance to improve your fitness. If you’re keen to get into better shape, then working as a warehouse operative might just be the role for you.
2. Strong work ethic
Although working in a warehouse can be rewarding, it can also be a challenge, at times. As with any workplace, there will be times when you have more on your hands than others. If you’re looking to get taken on as a permanent employee at a factory or warehouse, you’ll need to be able to really demonstrate your commitment. This might mean helping out with packing even if you normally unload lorries, working in a different area of production, or simply getting more done in a shorter space of time. Show them you can handle whatever’s thrown at you!
Now, no warehouse is going to expect you to go at lightning speed from day 1. But from the get-go, you should be paying attention to the clock. It’s vital that you work towards going as fast as you can without compromising quality. Ideally, you want to be the one who has everything ready for dispatch and on schedule. Once you’ve built up your confidence and responsibility in the prep schedule, who knows? You could eventually be looking at a promotion to Warehouse Supervisor…
4. Attention to detail
As anyone who’s seen the recent news items about errors in sandwich chain ingredients will know, stock quality can be the difference not just between success and failure, but life and death!
When you’re working on the production line, you will be playing a key role in quality control. You might be checking stock to make sure everything is as it should be. You could be using a hand-held scanner, packaging stock ready for orders or checking stock quality as it comes in. Whatever duties you’ll be given, it’s vital you are switched on and alert to any errors. The success of the business you’re working for could depend on it!
5.The ability to work in a team
In the fast-paced world of industrial work, it’s important to be able to pull together with your team. you’ll have set targets that you need to achieve. You could be working on the packing line, assembly line, in quality control or in a loading bay … wherever you’re placed, you’ll be working with others. Many of our temporary workers find they make friends for life in the warehouse. Above all, the number one quality you need to succeed in this kind of environment is the ability to be a real team player.
Due to the nature of industrial business, the most successful warehouse operatives will be those who can adapt to changing needs. This might mean working more hours one week than the next, or a different shift pattern. Of course, schedules will vary from business to business and some workplaces will expect more flexibility than others. But by and large, a little adaptability goes a long way in this field.
